“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…” — Galatians 5:22 KJV
Today’s devotion reveals why love comes first in this beautiful description of the Spirit’s fruit, followed by joy and peace: Because, “God is love” (1 John 4:8). As we trust Him and allow His love to shape our responses, His joy and peace fill our hearts and overflow into our relationships—even when people and circumstances test us!
Jesus reminds us that a branch cannot bear fruit by itself; it must remain connected to the vine (John 15:4–5). He is the embodiment of God’s love, and as we abide in Him, His life nourishes ours. Love, joy, peace, and the other characteristics of the Spirit grow as the natural fruit of that connection. We do not manufacture them by willpower; they develop as we draw from Him and yield to His Spirit.
But when we allow bitterness, anger, envy, and pride to take root, they disrupt the harmony love nurtures. Ephesians 4:30–32 warns against grieving the Holy Spirit and calls us to replace bitterness and malice with kindness and forgiveness. What we hold against others affects our fellowship with God and the way we treat those around us.
When Saul heard David being praised, he became consumed with comparison and jealousy. He began to see a faithful servant as a threat. His anger grew into suspicion and violence, damaging their relationship and robbing him of peace (1 Samuel 18:6–12). Someone else’s blessing does not diminish God’s goodness toward you!
Beloved, the fruit we bear reveals what is nourishing our lives—our connection to Christ or the desires of our old nature. Jesus said, “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20 KJV). Our words, attitudes, and treatment of others reveal what is shaping us. Let us stay rooted in His love so that those around us can experience the goodness of the One who lives within us!
Today, refuse to let comparison steal your joy or resentment rule your heart. Keep believing God, celebrate others, and choose words that heal. As you trust Him, may the God of hope fill you with “all joy and peace in believing” (Romans 15:13).
Have a joyful weekend, and may you and your family be encouraged, strengthened in love, and refreshed by God’s joy and peace! Shalom! 🙏🏽🙌🏾
Jeremiah 12:1–14:10
Jeremiah asks God why wicked people seem to prosper while the faithful suffer. God responds by showing that difficult times are ahead and that Judah’s rebellion has serious consequences. Despite the people’s unfaithfulness, Jeremiah continues to intercede for them. The passage also describes a severe drought, revealing the suffering that follows their continued disobedience.
Key Themes: God’s justice, suffering, wickedness, obedience, consequences, intercession, and repentance.
1 Thessalonians 1:1–2:8
Paul thanks God for the Thessalonian believers because of their faith, love, and hope in Christ. Their lives have become an example to others, and they have turned from idols to serve the living God. Paul also reminds them that he and his companions shared the gospel sincerely, with love and genuine concern for them.
Key Themes: Faith, love, hope, turning to God, sharing the gospel, sincerity, encouragement, and Christian example.
Psalm 79:1–13
The psalmist cries out to God after Jerusalem is destroyed and God’s people suffer humiliation. He asks God for mercy, forgiveness, and deliverance, acknowledging the people’s need for His help. He also asks God to defend His name among the nations. Despite their suffering, the people promise to praise God and testify to His goodness.
Key Themes: Mercy, forgiveness, suffering, deliverance, God’s glory, prayer, and thanksgiving.
Proverbs 24:30–34
The writer observes a neglected field belonging to a lazy person. The land is overgrown with thorns, and its stone wall is broken down. This teaches that laziness and neglect can gradually lead to poverty and trouble. Small acts of carelessness can have serious consequences, so we must be diligent and responsible.
Key Themes: Diligence, responsibility, laziness, planning, discipline, and consequences.
Final Reflection
Today’s passages remind us that faithfulness to God should shape both our hearts and our daily actions. Jeremiah teaches us to bring our questions and struggles to God while remaining mindful of the consequences of disobedience. Paul shows us the importance of sincere faith and genuine love for others. Psalm 79 encourages us to seek God’s mercy in difficult times, while Proverbs warns against neglect and laziness. May we trust God through uncertainty, live as examples of Christ, seek His mercy, and remain faithful in the responsibilities He has given us.
