AUGUST 25 – DEVOTIONAL
Your Setback Is Not Your Ending
Text: 1 Samuel 30:1–8; 1 Peter 5:10
Sometimes a new beginning comes after a season that feels like a complete setback. David knew this kind of season. When he and his men returned to Ziklag, they found their city burned and their families taken captive. David was deeply distressed, and even the people who had stood with him were speaking of stoning him. Yet Scripture tells us that David “encouraged himself in the Lord his God.”
That moment became a turning point. David sought God, received direction, and went after what had been lost. What looked like the end became the beginning of restoration.
Beloved, there may be moments when life does not look anything like what you expected. But a painful chapter does not mean your story is finished. God can give strength after exhaustion, direction after confusion, and restoration after loss. As 1 Peter 5:10 reminds us, after we have suffered for a while, the God of all grace is able to perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle us.
Perhaps today you need to stop measuring your future by what happened yesterday. Encourage yourself in the Lord. Seek Him again. Trust Him again. Take the next step again. Your setback may simply be the place from which God launches your next beginning.
Have a Victory-filled day, and may the Lord strengthen your heart, restore your hope, and give you grace for every step ahead. May what looked like a setback become a testimony of God’s restoring power and a beautiful new beginning. Shalom! 🙏🏾
Bible Reading Summary
Job 16:1–19:29
Job is deeply frustrated by his friends because instead of comforting him, they continue accusing him. He describes his suffering and feels that God has allowed him to be attacked. Yet, even in his pain, Job expresses hope that his witness is in heaven and that someone knows the truth about him. His friends continue to insist that suffering is the result of wickedness, but Job refuses to accept their judgment. He longs for someone to understand his pain and defend him.

1 Corinthians 16:1–24
Paul gives practical instructions about collecting money to support believers in Jerusalem. He encourages the Corinthians to give regularly and willingly. He also shares his travel plans and asks them to welcome and support fellow workers in the Gospel. Paul encourages the church to remain watchful, strong, courageous, and loving. He closes with greetings and a reminder that anyone who truly loves the Lord should remain devoted to Him.

Psalm 40:1–10
David remembers how he patiently waited for God, and God heard his cry and rescued him. The Lord lifted him from a difficult place and gave him a firm foundation, filling his heart with a new song of praise. David declares that obedience and a willing heart are more important than simply performing religious rituals. He joyfully shares God’s faithfulness and salvation with others rather than keeping God’s goodness to himself.

Proverbs 22:1
This proverb teaches that a good reputation is more valuable than great wealth. While money can provide temporary benefits, a person’s character and the respect they earn through honest and godly living have lasting value. It reminds us to prioritise integrity, trustworthiness, and a good name rather than allowing the pursuit of wealth to determine our choices.

Final Reflection
Today’s passages remind us that our character and faith are revealed most clearly during difficult seasons. Job shows us that even when others misunderstand our pain, we can continue to hold on to hope and trust that God knows the truth. Paul encourages us to serve generously, work together, and remain committed to Christ. David reminds us that God hears those who patiently wait for Him, while Proverbs teaches us that a good name is more valuable than riches.
The simple lesson is this: Stay faithful when life is difficult, serve others generously, wait patiently for God, and protect your character because a life of integrity is worth more than wealth.
